Back In-Person!

Summer Arts Institute (SAI) is a free, four-week arts program for New York City Department of Education public school students entering grades 8 through 12 in Fall 2022 (students currently in grades 7 through 11). This intensive program will return to full time in-person arts instruction, health guidelines permitting. SAI is held at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Astoria, Queens and is administered by the NYCDOE’s Office of Arts and Special Projects.

Students can major in FILM, DANCE, CONCERT BAND, ORCHESTRAL STRINGS, THEATER, VISUAL ARTS or VOCAL MUSIC. The program is designed for students at an intermediate or advanced level of study in their discipline. SAI offers a unique opportunity for students to work with DOE arts specialists, cultural organizations, and guest artists. This experienced team guides students in building a portfolio or audition skills for their next level of study: an arts-focused high school, college/university or conservatory.

The daily schedule includes studio work and experiences with professional artists. In the studios, students develop and improve their technical skills and creative expression in their art form. Time is dedicated to rehearsals, attending professional performances, visiting arts venues and exploring careers. The Institute culminates with an exhibition and performance showcasing the students’ work.

Admission to the Summer Arts Institute is by application and virtual audition (call backs in person). Students may apply and audition for only ONE studio.  Under current NYCDOE policy, all eligible students must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to participate in the Summer Arts Institute.  All participating staff and students who are eligible to receive the vaccine must show proof of vaccination prior to the start of the program.
